چکیده

F nearly a century there has been concern that several of California’s 20 native oak species are not regenerating adequately (Jepson 1910). Such concern was partially responsible for the 1986 establishment of the Integrated Hardwood Range Management Program (IHRMP), a cooperative effort to promote oak woodland conservation by UC, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and the California Department of Fish and Game (Standiford and Bartolome 1997). Evidence indicating that there is an oak regeneration problem in California is based largely on the observed paucity of young seedlings and saplings in the understories of existing oak stands (Bartolome et al. 1987). Describing the foothill oak woodlands in the Carmel Valley, White (1966) stated that “a prevailing characteristic . . . is the lack of reproduction . . . with very few seedlings.” A survey of 15 blue oak REVIEW ARTICLE

Effects of Cattle Management on Oak Regeneration in Northern Californian Mediterranean Oak Woodlands

Oak woodlands of Mediterranean ecosystems, a major component of biodiversity hotspots in Europe and North America, have undergone significant land-use change in recent centuries, including an increase in grazing intensity due to the widespread presence of cattle. Simultaneously, a decrease in oak regeneration has been observed, suggesting a link between cattle grazing intensity and limited oak ...

The Use of Tree Shelters with Northern Red Oak Natural Regeneration in Southern New England

he use of tree shelters with naturally established red oak seedlings was studied in southern New England mixedhardwood stands where deer browsing limited regeneration height growth. Seedlings of three size classes (basal diameters of 5 mm, 8 mm, and 15 mm) were cut off just above ground level during the dormant season to induce sprouting. Plastic tree shelters were placed over one group in each...

Influence of Winter-Spring Livestock Grazing on Survival and Growth of Quercus lobata and Q. agrifolia Seedlings

The relative importance of livestock grazing in limiting or enhancing oak recruitment remains unclear because results from previous studies have been contradictory. In Santa Barbara County, we have replicated large-scale planting experiments from 1997 to 2001 to determine the effects of cattle and other factors on seedling establishment of valley oak (Quercus lobata) and coast live oak (Q. agri...

Effects of Sowing Season and Cultivation Methods on Seedling Emergence, Survivor Rate and Growth of Astragalus flexilepes L. in Rangelands of Kermanshah Province, Iran

One of the fundamental difficulties in Iranian rangelands is the existence of wide area of poor condition rangelands that their grazing capability is low due to continuous livestock grazing pressure. Astragalus flexilipes is one of the palatable plant species of rangelands in Iran, while its distribution is being decreased due to improper grazing. The aim of this study was to ...

Long-term Growth and Persistence of Blue Oak (quercus Douglasii) Seedlings in a California Oak Savanna

We report on growth and survivorship of two cohorts of blue oaks Quercus douglasii Hook. & Arn. (Fagaceae) monitored at Hastings Reservation in Monterey County, California, the first growing in an unprotected old field and measured as seedlings in 1965 and the second planted as acorns in 1985 in several sites differing in their degree of protection from grazing. Growth of all individuals was ex...
